There is no end to my anger here.
1. Treat every weapon as if it is loaded
2. Never point the weapon at anything you do not intend to shoot
3. Keep finger off trigger until you intend to fire
4. Keep weapon ion safe until you are ready to fire.
Four simple safety rules that apply to every weapon in all circumstances. Every time there is a rifle, pistol, grenade launcher, etc. in your hands, you keep these rules at the front of your thought processes. What these Marines are doing is inexcusable...inexcusable! I'm so angry that I'm calling every Marine in my phone book and having them recite the safety rules to me!
The Cpl. now Pvt. deserves more than a BCD. He deserves a dishonorable. He deserves life imprisonment. And every Marine in that command needs to be relieved of duty and sent back to basic training.
WTF? Augh!

WTF indeed. Dishonorable discharge should have occurred, as that breaks not only military code, but also basic common sense...you do not point a loaded or unloaded gun at someone unless the intent is to kill them. There is no game or play involved.
If this were "widespread" I find it hard to believe it wasn't known but heads were turned away. This isn't something that was a one time deal, the stress, anxiety, and even boredom is widespread in Afganistan. It can be a cumulative effect and in this case had tragic consequences. Lack of sleep was most likely involved as well.
I can't help but expect grunts to have MUCH stronger discipline than that, though.
In a few simple words, we're not the flippin' Army, who I would expect something like this to come from.
watch it, you know several ppl in this family were in the army...
Mom, Dad, Uncle Jim, Grandpa, were in a very different army than is around today.
it's all about discipline... not enough obviously.
stupid people can join the marines too bryan.
